Park Ridge Utility Department - Hurricane Sandy Update – 10-29-12 - 9:30PM
This email message is to provide you with an update on the status of the utility operations in Park Ridge. Please be advised that we are still experiencing very high winds due to Hurricane Sandy. There are a significant number of trees and power lines down throughout the town causing power failures to numerous sections of the borough and isolated neighborhoods. At this time, it is too unsafe for the Electric Department crew to perform any repairs. Our electric crew will be resting through the night and we will be starting first thing in the morning to assess the problems and then starting to make the repairs. In addition, we have called in some retired lineman to assist us with the repairs. The crews will be working 16 hour shifts until power is restored to all of our customers.
There is most likely a number of live power lines hanging from poles and/or laying on the ground throughout the town. Please be advised that downed wires should always be considered “live.” STAY AWAY FROM ALL DOWNED LINES. Do not approach or drive over a downed line and do not touch anything that it might be in contact with. To report a downed wire or other damage, please call the Park Ridge Utility Department tomorrow after 8AM at 201-391-2113.
It is highly recommended that you stay indoors tomorrow (especially children). The first thing we will be doing in the morning is finding all of the hazardous wires and de-energizing them to make them safe. Once that is completed, we will begin to make repairs. If you are presently without power, please be patient as you should expect to be without power for multiple days. We should have a better idea of how long areas will be out after we perform the assessment tomorrow. We will do our best to try to get you updated information tomorrow.
Throughout the storm, the water system has not been compromised and continues to function properly even with power failures at some of our pumping stations. We do have backup generators at a majority of our wells which are keeping the tank levels and water pressures normal.
Finally, please be advised that as of this e-mail, one of the two sub-transmission feeds that supply the power from PSE&G to our town is out. It will most likely be out for a few days until they can make the repair (they are also experiencing a significant amount of power system problems). Although the second line has adequate capacity to supply our town, there is a potential that that line may fail due to the weather and the entire town would be out. We will continue to monitor the situation and communicate with PSE&G until the situation is resolved.
To report any life threatening emergencies, please call 911. The Utility Department office will be closed down by 10PM tonight so the staff can have time to rest and be ready for calls tomorrow. For non-emergencies, you can still call the utility department at 201-391-2113 and leave a message. The office will be staffed again by 8AM tomorrow morning.
Thank you for your cooperation and please stay safe!!!
Director of Operations.
